Fee:

The current cost for a TILLING order is $750, but the price will increase to $1500 on January 1, 2007. The Maize TILLING Project must be a full-cost recovery service by July 2008 [link to Cliff's letter]. The total cost of a TILLING screen including labor and supplies is ~ $3000. Funding from NSF will defray some of the TILLING costs as we transition to "self-sufficiency".

Invoices for TILLING requests will be sent out on or about the 21st of the month. When you submit your TILLING order, you can include the PO number if that will be the payment method. Payment by other means is to be remitted to Purdue's Centralized Accounts Receivable System (CARS) according to the directions on the invoice. We will order the unlabeled primers for your request when you submit the order, however, the IRD labeled oligos will not be ordered until payment has been received.

If you have questions regarding the invoice, please email: tilling-orders@lists.purdue.edu.

Primer Pre-screen Failures:

Users will have four attempts to find a primer set that works for their target. To date, only four of our 119 requests have required three or more attempts to find suitable TILLING primers. People who have tested out primers sets in their lab prior to submitting the TILLING request usually pass the pre-screen step the first time.

TILLING Failures:

Since we began taking public orders in December 2004, we have had only two targets that we could not TILL. TILLING failures will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Completed Screens:

TILLING screens are considered complete when we deliver an allelic series where there is a 95% confidence level that at least one of the mutations will be damaging (see "Criteria for delivering an allelic series"). Until we have a population with a higher mutation density, MTP is not enforcing the "lowest quartile" provision described on the STP site. However, we strongly encourage users to select a target in which at least 25% of the expected mutations will be non-silent.

Data Release:

The user has a 180-day confidentiality period that begins once s/he is notified by email that there are TILLING mutations for the gene target. After 180 days, the TILLING data but not the requestor's name, will be posted to the following databases

The "Maize TILLING Data" section has more details regarding the information found at each site.
